Amanda Blake started her made-in-L.A. knitwear label, Calder, because her pal Sofia Coppola asked her to design the perfect tee. “Sofia said she couldn’t find a great t-shirt that’s simple, had a great cut, and wasn’t too sheer,” Blake tells in her interview with Racked. “I kept saying I’m not going to do a line—it’s already out there. Eventually I got sick of hearing myself say no and making up excuses.”
Calder Blake is a line made up of pieces centred around designer Amanda Blake’s idea of creating beautiful, simple things-made to last. Inspired by designers and artists such as Nakashima and Arp who studied the spirit of a material and designed with this in mind. These artists used natural mundane materials such as wood, steel, clay and transformed the into pieces that have lived with us through the years. Calder Blake is built upon this ethos and is a line of beautiful understated clothing crafted from simple cotton jersey that will live in your closet for years to come. As Nakashima chose his wood wisely in crafting his furniture, so has Amanda in choosing the finest cotton jersey that is made in the United States. Calder Blake is accented by other natural fabrics that create a quiet, balanced and classic line made in California.
The designer’s background is in fashion design having studied at Parsons School of Design and worked in fashion in New York City and Los Angeles for many years. She is influenced by nature, art and the kindness embodied in the balance of hard work and time for family. Amanda, who lives in Venice, prides herself on working with local Los Angeles based craftsmen and supporting the community. Her pieces were in stores on both coasts, including Bird and Steven Alan.
Calder Blake is for a woman who loves all things natural, strives for simplicity with elegance. Our favourite pick is the peachy trousers and top! It is the perfect combo for looking fabulous on long flights!
